Greenwood Trail 5

Greenwood Trail 5: Rusland Valley and Yewbarrow

This Greenwood Trail offers one short route and one long. There is also an alternative short route for Black Beck caravan users only. Each can be accessed at various points where the route goes close to a road. Parking is limited to 1-2 cars at these pull-off places.

The short route is relatively flat and easy going. It follows open fields alongside a tidal river (the 'Rusland Pool'), through woodland and along a narrow road.

The longer route covers the contrasts between the tranquil flat riverside, peaceful mature woodland and rugged open fell. This trail is more demanding with clear but rough paths (appropriate footwear recommended). The route has plenty of ups and downs in the woods and a steep ascent up to Rusland Heights, with fabuous panoramic views. Check the weather forecast before starting and when you have finished, check yourself and your dog for ticks.

Due to the tidal nature of the river, some of the route may be impassable at certain times.

Did you know?

Black Beck Caravan Site is built on the site of the Black Beck gunpowder works which operated from 1860 until 1928. It was a very dangerous environment, with many killed and injured in numerous explosions. This Trail follows the route of the old horse-drawn tramway that linked the gunpowder works to the Furness Railway.
