Heritage Skills 2018: Hazel Baskets

Location: Force Knott Woods, Satterthwaite, Cumbria, LA12 8LL

A second chance to make a split hazel basket with Lorna Singleton. These baskets were a revelation when they were first taught in Cumbria a couple of years ago, having been resurrected by Welsh basket maker Ruth Pybus. Lorna has turned her skills with oak swills to perfect this cousin of the swill made with split hazel splints. I would like to say it is easier than riving oak but I am not sure that would be true but if you have not tried it yet then popping off perfect strips of hazel growth rings should be on your bucket list of things to do.

Details:

Learn how to make a frame basket using hazel and a knife. Course will cover material selection, making hazel strips safely using a knife, bending rims, handles and ribs, and weaving patterns. Please bring £10 to give to the tutor for materials.

We'll be using a knife and secateurs, people can bring those along if they have them and want to test out their own but Lorna will provide enough too.
