Heritage Skills 2018: Shave Horse Making

Location: Moss and Height Spring Wood, Bouth

New for this season, this course is in response to the number of people who have got the green woodworking bug on one of our courses but need this essential equipment to carry on making at home.

James Benson will be your tutor for this course. You will make a wooden bench type vice with turned parts and cleaving. Some experience preferable.

Materials: £20 to cover the cost of materials is to be paid to the tutor on the day.

What to wear and bring: Participants should bring sturdy footwear, waterproofs. We recommend wearing old clothes.

Age Limit: Courses are designed for 18years and over. If you are under 18, please contact us on rusland.horizons@lakedistrict.gov.uk to discuss other opportunities.

Meals: Bring a packed lunch, but tea and coffee will be provided.

Directions:

Leave the M6 at Junction 36, heading North West on the A590 towards Kendal. After 3 miles turn left onto the slip road to remain on the A590, signed to Barrow in Furness.

Stay on the A590 and continue past Lindale, Newby Bridge and Backbarrow. At Haverthwaite cross roads, just past the steam trains on the right, turn right at 'Lane Ends' towards Bouth. After a third of a mile turn left at the T junction onto 'The Causeway'.

Continue for about a mile to Bouth, and then turn right at The White Hart.

Continue for a third of a mile then take a sharp left to remain on the road (ignoring the sign to Hay Bridge). After a few bends in the road, look for the gate into the woodlands on the left.

Park on the road near the entrance. Parking is limited, but there are a few spaces further up the road.
