Heritage Skills 2018: Willow Baskets

Location: Finsthwaite and Lakeside Village Hall. The postcode area is LA12 8BJ.

New this year, we felt that willow weaving should not be left out of the mix as this is the original wood craft which predates most of the technologies developed by humans back into prehistoric times.

Materials: £15 for materials should be brought to the course and paid to the trainer on the day.

Cumbrian basket maker Helen Elvin will help you make a round based willow basket with locally grown brown willow ( this means the bark is still on and actually has a variety of colours).

"We will learn a number of weaving techniques - including pairing, randing and waling and will finish the top with a strong border. They are traditional skills but your own basket will be very individual in size and shape. Enjoy the process."

What to bring: Please bring a packed lunch with you; tea and coffee will be provided. If you are able to bring secateurs, an old sheet or cloth to wrap the basket in overnight and gardening gloves if you like to wear them that would be good, but don't worry, your tutor Helen will provide some too.

What to wear: Covered footwear, perhaps an apron.

Directions (from the south): At Newby Bridge on the A590 take the turning right over the river towards the Swan Hotel. Bear right towards Lakeside and pass the Lakeside Hotel on your right. When you get to Stott Park Bobbin Mill turn left. Turn left again towards the Church where the Hall is located behind the Church.
