Aspen Planting

Calling all tree-planters! Volunteers required in the Oxen Park and Bouth area next week, on Friday 31st January. If you'd like to help, please contact hello@ruslandhorizonstrust.org

Background: The Back on Our Map ('BOOM') project is a community focused species restoration project based in south Cumbria, working with the University of Cumbria and the Morecambe Bay Partnership, and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Between January and mid March 2020, BOOM are looking for suitable sites to plant aspen of north-west provenance into the Rusland Valley and surrounding areas. Aspen is a pioneer tree species that flourishes in open sunlight, in moist but well drained soil. BOOM would like to plant the trees with small groups of volunteers and will be looking for accessible sites where they can monitor tree health, ongoing establishment and take future root cuttings.

Trembling, fluttering and shimmering in the slightest breeze. The rippling leaves of this beautiful tree give it its name: quaking aspen.
